Mubu and the Ghosts & the Tiger |
“One day when I was six, I was taking care of my baby sister while my mother worked in our vegetable garden. Suddenly, in the distance, I heard a whistling sound from the forest. It sounded like a noisy laughing thrush, but I knew it was not quite the same sound as a real laughing thrush bird. I called back with my own whistle, and then after a few seconds I got a reply. I knew then that it was my grandfather Noom callinging me in the language of the laughing thrush.”[Read more ...] |
“His head was bigger than a buffalo’s. His long whiskers moved as he hissed at me, showing his huge fangs! There was no way I could escape from a monster like this. So what did I do? I stayed frozen. I didn’t make a move. I couldn’t move. He stared at me. It seemed like forever.” [Read more ...] |
Each story written by Peter Alexander and captured with beautiful artwork by Paulo Sergio, originates from real life experiences of Sanduen “Lek” Chailert, the founder of Elephant Nature Park, in Mae Taeng, Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Mubu made a nest for the baby owl, who still had no feathers, in her bedroom. She got up numerous times from her bed at night to find food for the weak, hungry bird. She talked to the owl, sang to it, and named him Hoot. Her patient survived, thanks to Mubu’s care, began to grow feathers, and slept with the girl in her bed. They loved one another. |
